Sable D'Or makes no bones about its inspiration and its owners: North African/French - a facade of blue & white Moorish tiles, skeletal outdoor chairs and tables, and of course an awning to protect from sun and rain. Inside follows suit with whitewashed walls, always adorned with a changing exhibition of art for sale, and there's a string of lamps above the food counter that float like clouds. The air is sweet with the smell of baking and freshly ground coffee, but that's not why people come here from all over London to sit and chat for hours. It's the patisserie of course.
Let's start with the most basic. Breads and baguettes are, like everything else on the menu, baked that morning at the earliest, or that minute at the latest. As for the treats, where to start? Everything you've tasted abroad on holiday and wished were available here is here, and just as mouth-wateringly prepared. And it's not just the sweet things; the quiche tarts are unrivalled. If you've a birthday or wedding coming up, celebration cakes can be ordered seven days a week. The owner, Mohamed Ladjassa, is a master baker, and the chefs have to live up to his standards.
Freshly-ground coffee in every combination is of course on order, but so too are whipped, fruit & yoghurt smoothies and milkshakes. That's why so many regulars drop in early for a continental or English breakfast. If you're a mother with a toddler in tow, you'll be pleased to know high chairs are provided. However, if you want a little more peace, there's an upstairs with long tables where you can sit and read or use the laptop (wi-fi of course), but also where parties, business meetings, and private celebrations can be held by arrangement.
